Believe In War - Using the tabletop role-playing game to transmit an anti-war message
A downloadable project
Human society has always had a history plagued with war and destruction. What makes us face each other this way? How are we capable of justifying the systematized violence that we exercise against our fellow men? This work proposes a new way of presenting and transmitting an anti-war message, through tabletop role-playing games. Building a game system that focuses on the reflection about war and the society that motivates it. This report investigates humanity's conceptions of war, especially using Ernest Becker's idea of the heroic cultural system. It also reflects on the innate characteristics that tabletop role-playing games possess in an inherent way to be such effective means to expose the theme. After the study, a methodology based on the criticism of the commented heroic cultural system is presented. As well as the development of the own game system, called Believe in War, is exhibited. Along with the results and conclusions of the executed playtesting.
